I have a Gateway GT4010 machine running XP Home.
I was installing alcohol120 today. It popped up a box saying that it was going to install a plug and play bios extension and before I could do anything it rebooted the PC. On re-start it got to the account log-in page. I started a session and watched as it started loading up system tray applications. When it was nearly finished it rebooted without any input from me.
I can repeat the log-in sequence indefinitely but cannot get anything going... I have tried going in under Safe Mode and it won't get to a gui screen, it just reboots. Same for all the other options after selecting F8. I get an error stating that "File \minint\system32\biosinfo.inf could not be loaded. The error code is 14 Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit."
This is machine has an nNvidia motherboard. I clicked through the bios screens, set everything to default and no luck. The recovery points were on a D partition which failed about 6 weeks ago (a FAT32 partition which lost it's file allocation table). About the only option I might have left is a wipe and re-install from the recovery CD; but I'm really hoping to avoid that because of all the documents and files in the My Documents folders.
Thanks in advance
