I have been having problems with IE ver 6 crashing every time I try to do a windows update, saying the error occurs with the mshtml.dll file. After researching this problem on the internet, I've only been able to find a temporary solution by restoring the file through sfc. Once I restore the file, I can do a windows update until the next time I'm notified that updates are available.

On this site, I did find a later version of the mshtml file, but when I tried to download it and replace my old one, I received an error that mshtml cannot be replaced because Windows is using it.

Any ideas on how I can replace it with the newer version? Thanks!

If you are running windows vista and possibly other versions of windows it sounds like from what I read it could be a problem with addons.

Here is a link on how to "reset" Internet Explorer back to default settings using windows vista.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/114310-internet-explorer-reset.html

Other operating systems should be similar just make sure all addons are removed and see if you are still receiving the error.

Also you should not remove Mshtml.dll it is important to the operation of Internet Explorer.

If you can also try to upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer.

In a MFC C++ (VS200 MDI application, we utilize IE as an HTML viewer/editor.  Intermittently, it crashes our application, but none of our code is in the call stack, and it appears to occur on a background thread on a timer in MSHTML.DLL (which is a component of IE) during a browser rendering operation based on the call stack.  This can fail at any point in time, however, we typically see it when switching from one window showing HTML to another window showing HTML.  Note that it may display the same HTML successfully hundreds of times successfully.  This is a critical failure, as we have thousands of customers who use this application, and when it crashes, they lose their work.  This appears to be a bug in both IE7 and IE8, as this failure occurs whether IE7 or IE8 is installed on the machine.

Sample HTML which may cause the failure is:

<html><HEAD><META content="text/html; charset=utf-16" http-equiv=Content-Type>
<STYLE type="text/css"> P { MARGIN: 0px } </STYLE></HEAD>
<BODY>
<P >We recommend that a written policy should be established
for copier usage.&nbsp; This policy should, at a minimum, identify
who is authorized to use the copier, guidelines for allowable use, method of
payment, specific uses which are not authorized, reporting, monitoring of use, etc.</P>
<P></P></BODY></HTML>
